First Snow

First snow of 2013.

Eleven inches, beautiful
white blanketing the
mountains.
All the brown grass, dead
leaves of winter, hidden
underneath this glorious
wet fluff.
Covering the Appalachian
also, power outages.
Three days, no convenience
of day to day life.
No cable, no internet, no
television, no lights other
than these flames from
candles, dancing,
forming shadows on the
walls.
No hot water, we all take
for granted these things.
As I sit here in the quiet
of the day, the only sound
reaching my ears is the
lovely sound of snow
turning into water
as it trickles down my
gutters, onto the slush
below.
