Valkyrie warriors, known for their beauty and fighting skills, make these women my favorite mythical creatures. In Norse Mythology (Old Norse – valkyrja “chooser of the slain”) these women get to choose who dies in battle and who they will bring back to their afterlife hall Valhalla which is ruled by the god Odin. Half of the slain go to the goddess Freyja’s afterlife field Folkvangr.
Valkyries are associated with the raven and swan. Sometimes they are portrayed traveling on winged horses. They are said to come from royal parents and they often have mortal lovers
Their are some who believe the Valkarie not only decided who would die in battle, but they also created the battles out of mischief or boredom. Troublemakers is often used to describe these women.
I first heard of the Valkarie from the long running television show Charmed. They weren’t portrayed as evil beings the sisters needed to vanquish. Rather they were viewed as believing men were the weaker gender and they trained them in the Valhalla to protect the Valkarie and the god Odin.
There are other mythical beings I find interesting such as unicorns and the terrifying yet romantic vampires. Faries would be my second choice. If I had to choose only one mythical creature to exist I would choose the Valkarie because they are beautifully empowered women.
